Teams participating and qualification routes

As of the 31st December 2018, the top nine ranked ICC Full Members gained direct qualification, along with hosts Australia, for the 2020 tournament. Of those ten teams, the top eight ranked sides from those ten teams qualified for the Super 12s stage of the tournament. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were the two teams who did not qualify automatically for the Super 12s, but were placed in the group stage of the competition, instead.  They were, in turn, joined by the six teams who had qualified for the competition via the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier. Teams coming from the ICC T20I Championship, namely the United Arab Emirates and Nepal were only able to qualify through regional competitions.

The top four teams from the group stage then progressed to the Super 12s.

Winners of Group A in the qualifier tournament, Papua New Guinea (PNG) became the first team to qualify directly for the 2020 Men’s ICC T20 World Cup. In fact, it was the first time that PNG had qualified for a World Cup in any format after they finished above the Netherlands on net run rate. While Ireland became the second direct qualifier as winners of Group B, also on net run rate, in the qualifier tournament.

Subsequently, the Netherlands qualified for 2020 Men’s ICC T20 World Cup by beating the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by eight wickets in the first qualifier match in the playoffs. Namibia made their first T20 World Cup, beating Oman by 54 runs in the second qualifier match. The third qualifier saw Scotland beat tournament hosts the UAE by 90 runs to secure their T20 World Cup spot. While Oman becomes the last team to qualify, beating Hong Kong by a slim 12 runs in the final qualifier match.

The next statement is a public information announcement, have you made sure of your 2020 Men’s ICC T20 World Cup tickets and got the tour information?
